Before I discovered RockTape RockGuards I had no idea about shin protection and sadly my shins bear the scars. I suffered a box jump fall causing quite a laceration. I’ve burned my shins from rope climbing more than a few times, and I’ve raked a barbell up my shins deadlifting a time or two or three or four and these newest shin guards were not available. Here is my RockTape RockGuards review.
It was then that I was trolling the shop at our box and saw what I didn’t even know to look for. Then I saw them, shin guards. Not only shin guards, but RockTape RockGuards so I bought ’em. They are the ones in the pic to the right. You can see the white wear line where the rope was sliding along my shin.
That was 4 and a half years ago and they are still in my gym bag, however I decided to update to what RockTape calls their 3rd version of the RockGuards.
When I bought my RockGuards there was no zipper and they had no foot strap, just slip them up your leg and go. The opening at the bottom of the guards that is closest to your ankle is very inflexible and is kind of like trying to put on the tightest pair of skinny jeans over your feet. Getting them off was just as hard. Having no foot straps especially when doing rope climbs allows the lower part go ride up exposing my lower shin to the rope and the end result was rope burn on my lower shin. I found I had to wear a long pair of socks over them to keep the guards from riding up.
Apart from those shortcomings these guards are solid. Mine have been through the wars and if I needed them now they would still work just as good as the first time I wore them. They have been washed and in the dryer more times than I can count, spent time at the bottom of my gym bag (hard to live through), been up the ropes hundreds of times and they keep on ticking.
Here’s what RockTape says about them
2″ Zipper for secure fit and easy removal
5mm Neoprene Shin Guard
Footstrap to keep in place during functional training
4-way stretch Lycra for a better fit
This new version is even more awesome thus this RockTape RockGuards review. They offer better protection than the ones I have retired. They’ve added a foot strap to keep them from riding up and a zipper down the side making it far easier and faster putting them on. The 5mm thick shin guard adds more protection than before and I for one really like that. They are thick enough for protection and not too thick you notice them.
Not long ago I did have another bad fall doing box jumps (got to pay more attention) and the guards prevented me from sustaining another hideous open wound. I did end up with a large hematoma, but that was the least of my worries.
Deadlifts are another great use for these guards. For good deadlift form you almost have to scrape the bar up you shins to complete the lift. The bar is very abrasive and when scraping it up your shins you easily end up with bleeding abrasions. Not after this RockTape RockGuards review
RockGuards are very comfortable on your leg so you barely know they are there. They move with you and not against you. The level of protection against serious cuts and abrasions is unparalleled with something so light and comfortable. I highly recommend these.
I give them a 5 out of 5 so ==>Click Here For More on RockTape Rockguards<==
